Fullersburg Woods is undoubtedly western Chicagoland’s best kept secret. Hidden in the village of Oak Brook along the banks of Salt Creek, these 222 acres could be the most romantically rustic place you’ll ever find in a metropolitan suburb, especially in the fall when Salt Creek is lined with leafy towers of red, orange, and gold. Fullersburg also houses a well-loved and well-maintained visitor center built in the 1930s by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program, the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), complete with educational programs, interactive exhibits, and a naturalist library. And just a few miles down the gentle trail—after crossing handsome, historic CCC bridges over Salt Creek—you’ll pass Graue Mill, a spooky nineteenth-century gristmill- turned-museum that was once part of the Underground Railroad.
