Hamilton County State Fish & Wildlife Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Over the years, the state of Illinois has taken advantage of its shallow valleys, rolling hills, and innumerable creeks to construct small recreational lakes that serve as the centerpiece of a number of parks and natural areas. I love these places—sometimes I enjoy fishing, but mostly I just love to hike and camp or even simply sit and relax near the open water. Of all these, Hamilton County State Fish & Wildlife Area is certainly one of my favorites.

The lake is beautiful, and the staff and campground hosts are friendly and helpful. You can fish or hike a few short trails, but most visitors come just to relax. Best of all, the campground is perfectly positioned on a wide point jutting into Dolan Lake and has been laid out so that virtually every site has an excellent view of the lake, which borders the campground on three sides. The tall trees throughout provide ample shade yet leave it feeling open and airy."
