The Illinois River valley has been attracting visitors for over 10,000 years, when the first Native Americans settled there to take advantage of the abundant wildlife, water, and fertile soil. Today a number of parks and wildlife refuges continue to draw hunters, anglers, birders, and campers to the area. One of the prettiest places to camp is beneath the oak or pine trees at Spring Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area. The park offers two quite different camping areas, separated from each other by several miles, and ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and fishing.
