Woodford County State Fish & Wildlife Area covers 2,900 acres, more than 80 percent of which is water—not surprising, since the Illinois River valley here north of Peoria is broad and low-lying, and the river spreads out to create large, shallow backwater lakes. The balance of the acreage is bottomland forest and seasonal wetlands, creating a combination that’s a welcome haven for waterfowl. Equally inviting to tent campers is the small primitive campground near the river, where you can watch blue herons catch their dinner, fish for your own, or just relax.
