Turkey Bayou Campground Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Turkey Bayou Campground is located between the Big Muddy River and Turkey Bayou, an abandoned oxbow lake of the Big Muddy. At 338 feet in elevation, this is just about as low as you can go in Illinois. It’s surrounded by water and consequently can flood; in fact, from spring to mid-summer you’re better off leaving it to the mosquitoes.
During the drier, cooler days of fall, however, Turkey Bayou is a great place to camp if you like solitude and don’t mind primitive sites. Outside of hunting season, chances are good you’ll have the place all to yourself and can use it as a base for exploring some the lesserknown sites of the eastern Shawnee Forest."
