McKinley Woods Forest Preserve Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Just before the Des Plaines River meets the Kankakee River to become the Illinois River, the Des Plaines arcs around a series of steep bluffs and plunging ravines. The inside of the arc is tipped by McKinley Woods, where you’ll find 473 acres of dramatic slopes, thick with oak and hickory, overlooking the Des Plaines River and the I&M Canal.

The quiet camping area at McKinley Woods sits at the foot of the bluff; it’s flat and grassy, with little shade. The campground is a short walk from a stretch of the canal where it becomes a large wetland. The wooded bluffs, the close proximity to the Des Plaines and the Illinois Rivers, and the historical attractions make this a favorite stretch of the I&M Canal Trail."
