Before I ever contemplated writing this book, Ferne Clyffe was my favorite place to camp in Illinois. I’m almost done visiting campgrounds for this book, and it still is. Somehow the combination of beautiful, secluded, comfortable campsites and excellent hiking draws me back again and again. Since it’s right in the middle of southern Illinois, it’s also a great base from which to explore the Shawnee Forest to the east and west.
