One of the most serene and isolated rivers in northern Illinois is the Sugar, which meanders lazily from Wisconsin south toward Rockford. Its waters are clear, flowing over sandy soil, along low banks, and by sandy bluffs. The surrounding countryside is mostly unspoiled by development, thanks largely to Winnebago County, which has set aside 529 acres along its banks to form the Sugar River Forest Preserve. Sugar River’s campground is popular, but there are also good spots for tent camping along the river.
