Folks not from Illinois (or from Chicago, which almost counts as a separate state) often think Illinois south of I-80 consists of nothing but mile after mile of flat corn and soybean fields. I hope the diversity of landscapes covered in this book serves to dispel that myth. However, around my hometown of Decatur in the center of the state, it’s true. The glaciers scraped us smooth and left a rich layer of soil that defaults to luxurious prairie or, with a little coercion, supports vibrant agriculture.
