Oak Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Although a pilgrimage for many spellbound by the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, Oak Park is also a delightful place to go for a stroll. The myriad architecturally significant buildings are but a bonus, and after a few blocks you’ll begin to question the veracity of the oft-repeated quote attributed to local son Ernest Hemingway, who said Oak Park had “broad lawns and narrow minds.” Let’s face it, he was probably drunk. As for Wright, yes, he was America’s greatest architect, and yes, he was an uncommon and original genius, but that’s no reason for the hagiolatry on display by the vast crowd of architectural tourists, equipped with guidebooks and grim expressions, that throngs Oak Park’s streets. Instead, have fun with Wright and Oak Park, enjoy his often-beautiful legacy while recalling that he was one of America’s great characters."
