Hyde Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Hyde Park’s raison d’etre, the University of Chicago, has kept the neighborhood vibrant even as surrounding areas of the South Side have struggled. Perhaps, however, “vibrant” is the wrong word for an institution noted for its deep thinkers. That the U of C has a perennial lock on the Nobel Prize for Economics is a given, but it’s also renowned for its programs in theology, literature and dead languages. Physics also makes a bang: this is where the U.S. Manhattan Project had its first crucial success in the quest to build the bomb. Many of the University’s buildings are done up in classic Gothic designs featuring rich carvings, making it an endlessly engrossing place for a stroll. Bookstores way outnumber bars in Hyde Park; bibliophiles may wish to bring a sturdy backpack, drinkers a six-pack."
