Deep in the heart of the Windy City, this easy stroll through steel canyons is a perfect introduction to the city’s architecture and history. Ever since a Haitian fur trader built the first permanent settlement on the north bank over 200 years ago, the Chicago River has been the main artery of the city. From here, nearly all of Chicago’s most iconic structures are visible, from the Gothic buttresses of Tribune Tower to the infamous “corn cobs” of Marina City. And if you happen to visit on St. Patrick’s Day, the entire river will be dyed green.
