Channahon and Gebhard Woods State Parks Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The year 1848 witnessed an economic development that would forever change Illinois and the whole Midwest—the opening of the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Dug entirely by hand, this 96-mile corridor linked Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, completing a water route from the eastern seaboard to the Gulf of Mexico.
At the crossroads, Chicago would prosper as a major transportation hub. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, today the historic canal continues to be good for business, now as a recreational venue for hikers, anglers, cyclists, canoeists, and campers. And of the several places to camp along the way, two of the best for tent campers are Channahon State Park and Gebhard Woods State Park."
