As the Prairie Trail spans nearly the entire north–south length of McHenry County, it shoots past some of the most scenic spots within northeast Illinois. In between towns such as Crystal Lake, McHenry, Ringwood, and Richmond, the trail takes you through stunning natural areas at Sterne’s Woods, Glacial Park, and Nippersink North Branch Conservation Area. The trail is difficult due to the length and the long sections where trail users are fully exposed to wind and sun. After finishing the Prairie Trail, the route heads west for 6.7 miles along the Hebron Trail.
