If you’re looking for wildlife, this is the place. Just outside of Palatine, the lush savannas, woodlands, and wetlands at Crabtree are always filled with birds, butterflies, and deer. In just a couple miles you’ll pass through several distinct landscapes, each with its own aesthetic and naturalistic appeal. Anchored by a well-kept visitor center with hands-on exhibits for children, the gently rolling meadows and forests on the Phantom Prairie Trail are truly ghostly remnants of a much older age, when the entire Upper Midwest was carpeted with tallgrass prairies, wildflowers, and roaming herds of bison.
