Oldtown to Lake Pend Oreille

Oldtown to Lake Pend Oreille Professional Review and Guide

"This is a low-key, 40-mile drive on paved back roads through the pastoral north country. It runs straight as an arrow from Oldtown to Blanchard before turning to Spirit Lake and going on to the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille, with a visit to the historic naval base that is now part of Farragut State Park.

Begin at the Washington-Idaho state line, which runs between the twin communities of Newport, Washington, and Oldtown, Idaho. Newport is known as the “City of Flags,” and lives up to that name with banners flying along both sides of the road. The theme is carried over onto the Idaho side, where the bridge across the Pend Oreille River is festooned with gaily flapping flags.

Special attractions include: Spirit Lake; peaceful hay meadows and country scenes; a chance to reminisce with World War II veterans at a former naval recruit training base; and scanning the slopes across chilly Lake Pend Oreille for mountain goats. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
