Sacajawea Hot Springs

Sacajawea Hot Springs Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This guide includes Trail Creek Lakes and Baron Lakes. A number of soaker-friendly pools line a beach along the scenic river. The outflow from several springs, at temperatures up to 153 degrees F, cools as it fans out down the bank.

Fine-tune the pool temperatures by adding river water. Another welcome refuge for weary hikers, Sacajawea is found just a mile from one of the principal gateways into the Sawtooths. You couldn’t ask for a nicer finish to any hike."

This is an excellent hike that starts at GrandJean walking on relatively flat terrain with several creek crossings over the first 7 or 8 miles. The last 3-4 miles ramps up quickly into sub-alpine and alpine trail. The start of this section is marked by a gorgeous waterfall dropping from lower Baron lake. There are three lakes in all with beautiful views on all sides. An alternative is to hike from RedFish campground or the transfer inlet and then through Flat Rock Junction, Alpine Lake and over Baron Divide from the other end. This is equally as far and has higher elevation gains. The sunsets at Baron Lakes are among the best in the Sawtooths!!
