Baker Lake

Baker Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Beautiful Baker Lake is a short, easy hike in Idaho’s Smoky Mountains. It’s a fairly easy hike to the lake. The trail is obvious all the way as it climbs, quite steeply, through flower-filled meadows to the lake in just 1.3 miles. Total elevation gain is about 900 feet.

The trail is closed to motor vehicles, and a sign says so at the beginning of the trail. A few yards past the trailhead, an unnamed tributary of Baker Creek flows over the trail, requiring a wade in June. Beyond this point, the trail is easy and obvious."

The hike is advertised as easy, but has significant altitude gains. An older woman near us was struggling to get to the top and a family coming down was carrying all 3 kids. Also, is significant forest fire damage. Consider going to Fourth of July Lake or Lake Washington instead.

This is an easy hike that has some great wildflower viewing. You can still see whole sections of burned out forest from a previous big fire. The lake at the end is very pretty. It's not a challenge for experienced hikers but this is still a nice easy one for kids or if you just want to see some amazing flower displays and get outside.

This is an easy trail to a lake that is only okay if you're looking for a scenic alpine lake. Some of the best views were back toward the east and the Boulder Mountains. It was nice way to spend a couple of hours.
