Mill Creek Lake and Firebox Summit

Mill Creek Lake and Firebox Summit Professional Review and Guide

"This scenic lake looks as though it’s alpine but opens early in the season. When winter’s ice still grips most high mountain lakes, Mill Creek Lake, in the rugged Lemhi Mountains, is usually suitable for a hike and overnight camping. Dammed by a landslide, the lake lies in a short, rocky canyon. The rocks and cliffs enclosing the lake may cause you to think the surroundings are more alpine than they really are.

A faint trail above the lake leads to Firebox Meadows and Firebox Summit. This beautiful meadow and forest country, which is important elk range, contrasts sharply with the rocky lake environs below. You can usually reach the lake by mid-June, although July and August are the best months to visit."
