Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The classic Gospel–Hump hike is known for profuse wildflowers, solitude, fishing, and a spectacular vista of Salmon River Canyon. It is also a historic mining district and has glory holes.

The Gospel–Hump area, just north of where the Salmon River runs through the maze of the Salmon River Mountains, is characterized by pronounced glacial features on the north and east side of the ridges and by fairly gentle south and west slopes. The trails typically wander along the more gentle slopes through subalpine fir, whitebark pine, and Engelmann spruce combined with numerous open parks and meadows. The meadows are wet most of the year and display many kinds of wildflowers, such as alpine heather, shooting star, pinks, and lupine. Mountain goats and a few bighorn sheep inhabit the heights, while mule deer and elk are common on the lower slopes. Moose migrate from lake to lake and are particularly common in Jumbo Canyon."
