Clanton Creek Recreation Area

Clanton Creek Recreation Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Although Madison County is best known for its covered bridges and for being the birthplace of John Wayne, sadly no feature flick has been made about Clanton Creek Recreation Area. Hike the 2.0-mile loop or the 8.0-mile out-and-back trail that goes up and down—and up and down—over the real hills of south-central Iowa. Three hike-in campsites make this an ideal place to spend the weekend.

From the east access parking lot, before entering the forest you’ll take a quick jaunt in the uplands, where prairie reconstruction has yielded big and little bluestem, Indian grass, sideouts grama, purple coneflower, and several species of goldenrod. You’ll be able to tell the seeded prairie from the unrestored uplands on the west side, which are scrubby and invaded by bromegrass and eastern red cedar."
