Fossil and Prairie Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"A visit to Fossil and Prairie Park will give you an expansive look into north-central Iowa’s past, as well as the chance to take a little piece of it home with you. Outside Rockford at the bottom of an old quarry-turned-park, a 350-million-year cross section of Iowa is visible. On the knob next to the quarry, a virgin prairie tract is home to several rare species.
Juniper Hill, to the north, is the only recorded site in Iowa for creeping juniper, a species more commonly found in Minnesota and Canada. A rail-to-trail leads from the town of Rockford into the park, where paths are mowed through the prairie and around several ponds and a wetland, leading to access points into the belly of the fossil-rich quarry."
