Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge

Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge Professional Review and Guide

"Less than 0.1 percent of the original native tallgrass prairie that once covered Iowa remains in existence today. That’s why the reconstruction of 5,000 acres of tallgrass prairie at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is truly inspirational.

Three miles of trails lead you through the reconstructed prairie’s tall grasses and wildflowers, into a piece of oak savanna, and within view of the bison and elk range. The Friends of the Prairie Learning Center, which serves as a base for the restoration and ongoing research, features in-depth exhibits."

The visitor center is amazing and definitely worth the trip. You will gain a deep appreciation for the prairie if you take the tour. There is also a car tour that features free range Bison and Elk that actually can come right out on the road. There are several short hiking trails in the park that can give you a nice taste of the prairie. This is a special place that really gives you a feel for what Iowa and the great plains were like before they were entirely converted to farm land.
