Brushy Creek State Recreation Area Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Brushy Creek contains 35 miles of multiuse trails and offers a multitude of recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing, boating, and equestrian and hiking trails. A controversial 1967 proposal to flood Brushy Creek’s stunning forested canyon led to a twenty-year struggle over future development.
In the end, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources created a state preserve to protect an extremely sensitive tract (260 acres), impounded a smaller lake than earlier proposed (690 acres), and acquired additional land to build more equestrian trails (1,750 acres). Though not every group involved was satisfied with the outcome, many people now enjoy the multiuse aspect of Brushy Creek."
