Brushy Creek State Recreation Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Brushy Creek contains 35 miles of multiuse trails and offers a multitude of recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing, boating, and equestrian and hiking trails. A controversial 1967 proposal to flood Brushy Creek’s stunning forested canyon led to a twenty-year struggle over future development.

In the end, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources created a state preserve to protect an extremely sensitive tract (260 acres), impounded a smaller lake than earlier proposed (690 acres), and acquired additional land to build more equestrian trails (1,750 acres). Though not every group involved was satisfied with the outcome, many people now enjoy the multiuse aspect of Brushy Creek."

Excellent hike until the spillway. DNR really needs to build a bridge for hikers as it just is not safe to ford there. Had to go back on walk on the main road for half a mile or so. Many equestrians about, but all very polite and friendly. Makes it necessary to watch your step! While it is safe on the trail, it is a little disconcerting hearing guns off and on.

The trails are very well kept up- though don't expect them to be well marked. If you look hard enough through the printed materials at the campgrounds you will find a decent one page map that also has the water depths on it. Also expect to ford the creek on some of th trails. We couldn't ford just south of the spillway as the water was about 6' deep - too much for hikers like us. Lots of horses on the trails, so watch your step. Lots of ticks.

We had a good time. We used the trails to break in some new packs we just bought.
