Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The largest block of contiguous forest in the state, Shimek was named for one of Iowa’s most important conservationists. The first unit was purchased in the mid-1930s after a century of logging and farming had left it infertile. In the late 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps planted thousands of evergreen trees to demonstrate a reforestation regime for state parks and private landowners.

An old railroad bed serves as the main thoroughfare in the adjoining Farmingon and Donnellson Units, the designated hiking-only units. Mowed firebreaks and several dirt roads spur off onto small loops through tree plantings and to Shagbark, Black Oak, and White Oak Lakes."
