This ride is crammed with appealing places to explore. The first section traces the Mississippi River south through a few parks and Moline’s newly rejuvenated downtown. After crossing the Mississippi via Rock Island, you’ll embark on a 24-mile loop through the Iowa cities of Bettendorf and Davenport. In Bettendorf, the Duck Creek Trail guides you along a dozen miles of scenic greenway punctuated by a series of open, grassy parks. Illiniwek Forest Preserve, the starting point for this ride, overlooks a dam that stretches for half a mile across the width of the Mississippi River. The park serves as a perfect place to watch the progression of river barges lumbering up and down the waterway and passing through the locks. Starting south on the Mississippi River Trail from Illiniwek Park, you’ll breeze by a small local-history museum and an old-fashioned ice cream shop in the sleepy riverside village of Hampton. South of Hampton, the lightly wooded grounds of Empire Park contain a trailside visitor center with displays focusing on the ecosystem of the Mississippi River.
