Twin Lakes Road Professional Reviews and Guides

"Ride through beautiful scenery, pine and aspen forest around Twin Lakes."

"Filled with folks during summer, this matching pair of deep and gorgeous lakes transforms into a tranquil and remote wonderland when snow-covered in winter. This lightly forested shoreline route is pleasing to the eye the whole way, and it’s ideal for novice snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Dramatic peaks rise suddenly above the lakes in all directions but east, some towering up to 4,000 vertical feet above the long and lean lakes. The scattered trees and shrubbery and the open lakes offer ideal patrolling grounds for red-tailed hawks. Blue grouse hide in the bushes while Steller’s jays squawk in the lower conifer limbs. Look for the gray-crowned rosy finch flittering in the pines or a wily coyote sneaking along the lake’s edge. Try to spot animal tracks in the open areas, such as those of the long-tailed weasel. Since the course is predictable and easy to follow, it can be negotiated while snow is falling or if the skies are low overcast. You can trudge along the southern shore for up to 4.5 miles and retrace your steps, especially if snow levels are low enough for vehicle traffic on the lake’s north shore road. The trip can be reduced to a 4-mile loop in heavy snow by circumnavigating the lower lake."
