North Pit Junction to Mauna Loa Cabin Professional Review and Guide
"If you decide to push on past North Pit, you can spend the night in a comfortable (if Spartan) cabin, or camp under the stars at the rim of Moku’aweoweo crater at the top of the world’s biggest volcano. This is the only place near the summit of the mountain with shelter and (sometimes) water. It’s only 2.1 miles from North Pit and only 5.9 miles from the Observatory Trailhead, but it will seem longer.
Read the entries in the logbook at the cabin if you think you’re the only person to ever have felt this tired . . . and triumphant. If you have the time (and adequate water) this is a good place to settle in for two nights and make the 8.4-mile round-trip trek to the actual summit and back as a day hike."
