Iliau Nature Trail

Iliau Nature Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Waimea Canyon State Park, has recently been given a thorough renovation with shiny new signs identifying the plants along the route and adding fascinating bits of lore about each. You don’t need signs to tell you that the things growing around you are no ordinary roses and petunias, but weird and rare organisms utterly unlike anything you have ever seen.

The stars of the show are the pompons-on-sticks—the iliau—that grow only here on Kaua’i. This is also good place to enjoy breathtaking views down into Waimea Canyon without cars whizzing along a highway just behind you."

Robert Stone
"The Iliau Nature Loop is a short, self-guided path around a flat clearing on the dry western slope of Waimea Canyon. Several native plant species are identified with name plates. A covered picnic area and several benches are perched on the canyon’s edge for great vistas into Waimea Canyon. Waialae Falls can be seen plunging off the cliffs across the gorge."
Suzanne Swedo
"The trail through this Alice in Wonderland grove, part of Waimea Canyon State Park, has recently been given a thorough renovation, with shiny new signs identifying the plants and adding fascinating bits of lore about each. You don’t need signs to tell you"
