Makapuu State Wayside

Makapuu State Wayside Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Makapuu State Wayside sits on the easternmost tip of Oahu. This trail, a former lighthouse access road, leads to majestic vistas on Makapuu Point. From the 600-foot ocean bluff are two observation decks, World War ll bunkers and a working lighthouse. Off the shore from the steep cliffs are Manana “Rabbit” Island, an old volcanic crater, and Kaohikaipu “Turtle” Island, both state seabird sanctuaries. Makapuu Point is also an excellent whale watching site.

Koko Crater and Koko Head are prominent in the southwest. As the trail joins the cliff’s edge at Puu o Kipahulu, curve left and head north, parallel to the eroded cliffs overlooking the coastline. As the trail levels out, curve left toward the bunkers at the summit. To the right are the two observation platforms. The lighthouse is 100 feet below near Makapuu Point."

Paved trail for truck access, a nice winding stroll up the side of a mountain with a good view at the top of some islands, the shore, a lighthouse, and a mountain range. Fairly popular because of its ease of use.

This was our first Oahu hike. Pretty easy and great view from the point. Definitely try to go between Nov and April, the whale watching season. We must have seen 20 whales in March. Very nice.
