This is a good steady workout, conveniently close to Kahului. There is a surprising variety of scenery for such a short hike, and the views out over the coast are wonderful if the weather is clear, as it is more likely to be early in the morning. Hunting is permitted here on weekends and holidays, so wear bright clothing, but you don’t need to be unduly nervous. Leave nothing in your car at the trailhead. From the parking area at the clearly marked trailhead, go around a gate and start climbing up an old road. It’s dirt for the first few feet, then becomes cement. At 0.2 miles a yellow arrow on a rock directs you to the left (south), leaving the road. Walk alongside a wire fence through open pastureland where weedy, but pretty, bright blue Jamaica vervain blooms in spring.
