This is a good place to stretch your legs on the long road to Hana. It involves a steep climb but is very short, traveling through magnificent old forest with views of Waikamoi Stream and the ocean. There are no facilities of any kind here. Take mosquito repellant. The sheer size of the trees along this trail will leave you gasping. This is a nature trail and many of the big trees are labeled. You might be surprised to discover that most of them are kinds of eucalyptus, but eucalyptus bigger than you ever imagined. The vines climbing up into their branches, sometimes completely covering the trunks, should also seem familiar, but are so large you might not recognize them as ordinary houseplants. Among them are philodendron and pothos, whose leaves are the size of umbrellas. Among the deep greens are startling red bunches of heliconias. You can see how they earned their common name of lobster claws.
