This is a very popular (and safe) way to explore a potentially dangerous volcanic phenomenon. A lava tube forms when hot liquid rock flows at just the right rate of speed beneath the surface to allow the crust to cool while the still molten lava river continues to rush along underground. When this molten material drains away, it leaves a hollow tunnel. This tube is in a beautiful setting in a forest of tree ferns, and is dimly lighted so you can find your way.
