Kipu Falls

Kipu Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Kipu Falls is a 20-foot waterfall plunging into a large, deep pool ringed by 20-foot cliffs. The trail follows a cane road parallel to Huleia Stream, a large body of water cascading through the forest.

The jagged mountain ridges of the Haupu Range serve as a backdrop to the cane fields. On the weekends, locals dive and swim here, but be extremely cautious, as the footing on the cliffs around the pool can be treacherous."

Despite the great description, its proximity to Lihue, the appeal of jumping into fresh water, and the chance to get off the beaten path, Kipu Falls is on private land and is now closed. Locals in the area said that landowners erected fences, hired security guards, and issue trespassing tickets to keep people from visiting Kipu Falls. This action was taken to prevent alleged negligent use which lead to injuries and fatalities. As outdoor enthusiasts we need to do a better job of taking care of these places and safely pursuing the activities we choose so that land owners no longer feel compelled to keep us from using these places.

Great, short walk through the jungle that ends at the top of the waterfalls. Everyone jumped off into the pool and swung from the rope swing. Very busy location, but a lot of fun and a great break from the hot beach!

Short walk through cane field to top of falls. No real access to a spot at bottom of falls. Was fun to watch folks jumping the 25+ feet over the falls into swimming hole. Two in our group joined them!

This was SO much fun! The falls pour over a 20' cliff to a perfect swimming hole! There is also an enormous tarzan swing for launching yourself from great heights into the pool below. The water was plenty deep. My boyfriend did a backflip off the swing and even he (at 6'5") didn't go anywhere near bottom. I jumped off the top of the falls and didn't touch either. We will definitely be doing this again this June on our return trip!
