    Mala Wharf - Maui

Mala Wharf - Maui Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A longboarder’s dream wave on the right day, Mala Wharf is a fickle spot best in summer (April to September). A long left-hand reef coral shelf makes the wave jack up and peel fast. There are winter rights in a northwest swell. Shallow low-tide reefs 1 to 2 feet deep and urchins make entering via the next available gully the best way out—or use the boat ramp. This was called the best wave in the Hawaiian Islands by 1960s longboarders, who found the sheltered reefs perfect for long nose rides and stylish turns a la Johnny Fain of Malibu fame.

Today it still pumps great clean waves, but the gilt has gone from the area. Neglected by investors, the neighborhood reflects the mood but not the quality of the waves, a new surf karma rarely rivaled anywhere in the world. Best Boards: Longboards and shortboards. This chapter also includes a brief description of Lahaina Harbor."
