Kauapea “Secret” Beach

Kauapea “Secret” Beach Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Kauapea Beach, known locally as Secret Beach, is a long secluded stretch of golden sand at the base of the sheer cliffs just west of Kilauea Point. It is unofficially a clothing optional beach.

From the beach are great views of the Kilauea Lighthouse and the island of Mokuaeae, a sanctuary for thousands of nesting and migratory birds. The access is down a ravine through a tropical forest with palms and hanging vines to the base of the cliffs."

This beach doesn't seem to get very crowded because you do have to schlep everything down a path. It's not particularly long, but it's a little rocky and uneven. Once you get there though, it's a long, beautiful, mostly secluded beach. One side is covered with black rocks, but the other is just a long stretch of beautiful beach with a view of the lighthouse. This is a great beach to body surf and boogie board--although I did watch a couple get pummeled. It's not for beginners. Trail is NOT stroller-friendly.

This a nice beach for sunrise, sunset, and everything in between. A great picture spot and not very crowded.

This might have been one of our favorite beaches on Kauai. There is a small parking lot at the end of the road to the trailhead. It is a fairly steep descent to the beach. Be careful. The main trail had washed out, so we had to bushwack the entire way down. It was OK, but not for those unstable on their feet. Due to this, few people come here. So most likely you will have it to yourself and only a couple other tourists. To the West were huge rocks being hit by large waves. A great site. To the East was the long Kauapea Beach with views of the Kilauea Point lighthouse in the distance. It was great…
