La Perouse Bay to Cape Hanamanioa Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This hike begins at La Perouse Bay, an isolated bay at the southwest tip of Maui. The trail passes tide-pools, rocky coves, lava formations, ancient rock walls and enclosures to a light beacon on the tip of Cape Hanamanioa. The oceans surrounds the beacon on three sides while Haleakala towers above to the northeast. The hike skirts La Perouse Bay along a rutted jeep road that runs parallel to the “King’s Highway.” The “King ’s Highway,” an ancient Hoapili Trail, was constructed with rough lava rock between 1824-1840.
Head south on the unpaved road, parallel to the ocean. The road joins the shoreline and curves around La Perouse Bay. Under the shade of kiave trees, pass tidepools and lava formations. At 0.5 miles, just beyond Beau Chien Beach, the sandy, shaded trail crosses a stark lava field. On the right is an ancient square lava rock enclosure. On the left, at the fenceline, is an signed connector path to the Hoapili “King’s Highway” Trail."
