Kaiwa Ridge Trail

Kaiwa Ridge Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Kaiwa Ridge Trail follows the ridge in the Keolu Hills between Kailua Bay and Waimanalo Bay. The trail leads to an ocean lookout at an old military bunker above Lanikai Beach with incredible 360-degree views.

The expansive views extend north to Mokapu Peninsula and inland across the Koolau Range. Offshore are the twin Mokulua Islands and Popoia “Flat” Island, all three seabird sanctuaries. The well-defined path is not a designated or maintained trail but is frequently used. The short hike requires some careful footing due to the loose rocks and steepness."

Strenuous in the early sections. Very steep, requiring you to pull yourself up by grabbing trees, for the first 200 ft climb. After that, the trail levels out with a few more short steep sections. Can be slick after rains, and footing is loose and grainy at all times. I have fallen unexpectedly on this trail, and there are VERY steep drop-offs with no rails of any kind. So come prepared with appropriate footwear. Not for the faint of heart or for those with poor balance (wind can be strong and gusty). Once on top, the views are spectacular out over Kailua Bay, Lanikai Beach, Waimanalo Bay, and the Ko'olau Range. Sunsets are reliably beautiful because clouds typically sit over the Ko'olau Range but the setting sun always seems to break through for dramatic effect.

A nice short hike to an old military bunker atop a ridge overlooking Kailua Bay. Be prepared for loose, grainy footing and windswept conditions. Great views!!
