Sliding Sands Trail to Kaluu o Ka Oo, Haleakala National Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Kaluu o Ka Oo is a multi-colored cinder cone on the south end of the Haleakala Crater. The cinder cone is below the ridge of Red Hill near the summit of Haleakala. The Sliding Sands Trail, located by the visitor center, descends into the crater on a cinder and ash path.

The trail follows the base of the south rim into the barren moonscape with continuous magnificent vistas. A half-mile spur trail climbs to the rim of Kaluu o Ka Oo, offering views into the cinder cone."

Great hike in an unbelieveable and unique setting. Bring lots of water and solid high-topped hiking shoes/boots that keeps the lava cinder out. I hiked in semi-sandals.... ouchies. Moderately strenuous. Did this with my 14 and 11 year-old daughters and they did well.

This is a great trail if you're looking for something different than wooded, verdent spaces. There's something amazingly lunar about the desolation here. It's so quiet that the sounds of your boots crunching in the volcanic sands and your heartbeat are amplified.

This hike is at roughly 10,000 feet, so bring PLENTY of suncreen (I actually managed to get sunburned THROUGH a longsleeved shirt) and be prepared to work harder because of the decreased amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere.

If you're serious about seeing the entire 10+ miles of trails, I recommend reserving a cabin down in the volcano (there are three available) and breaking it up into two days.

Totally worth the effort.

Awsome views of the valley of creaters, multicolored landscape, plenty of photo opportunities. Hike is quite easy, just take your time as the elevation is close to 10,000 feet. Windy at destination. Well above clouds, you''ll feel like on a lunar trip zigzagging to the bottom.

Some say that this is very difficult to hike from the bottom up. While it's not a piece of cake, it can be done by chugging upslope one bootstep at a time.
