Pakaoao (White Hill) and Puu Ulaula (Red Hill), Haleakala National Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Pakaoao (White Hill) is the favorite spot for experiencing the world-renowned Haleakala sunrise. White Hill is adjacent to the visitor center, with a book store and exhibits about the volcano. The awesome views from the 9,778 hilltop extend into and across the immense crater. Puu Ulaula (Red Hill) is a cinder cone on the southwest rim of Haleakala. At 10,023 feet, the hill is the highest spot on Maui. The vistas take in the entire island of Maui, the offshore islands of Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe and the Big Island to the southeast. A 360-degree glass-enclosed observation and exhibit building allows for weather-sheltered panoramic views.
The White Hill hike begins at the visitor center. The short quarter-mile trail loops to the right (south). Curve around the basaltic knob on the gentle grade, gaining 150 feet up to the summit. The Red Hill stroll circles the parking area from the summit of Maui. The paths take you to numerous vista overlooks and the glass-enclosed viewing shelter. Meander along your own route."
