Halemauu Trail to Holua Cabin, Haleakala National Park Professional Review and Guide

"The Halemauu Trail to Holua Cabin descends the sheer cliffs of Haleakala on the west crater wall. The trail begins at 8,000 feet, where dramatic switchbacks zigzag down to Koolau Gap on the crater floor.

Along the way are magnificent views into the crater and down the Keanae Valley to the ocean. On the cliffs behind the cabin is a cave; a hundred yards to the east is a lava tube. This hike can be combined with the Sliding Sands Trail for a one-way 11.5-mile shuttle hike."

This was a great trip. I would recommend it to anyone, the reason I say anyone there was a group of 7-10yr olds (with park rangers and teachers on a field trip)hiking down as we were coming up. We also meet a few blind folks with there guides coming out of the creator just finishing there fifth day there. This is by no means a hike for some one without experience, this is a demanding hike. The views were breathtaking the weather was extremely clear which is not the norm for this area. Our hike at a slow pace took us about 2.5 hours down to the cabins and at a moderate pace we hoofed it out in just less than 1.5 hours. The landscape on the craters floor is unlike anything I had ever seen. It was a great time with friends that I will not soon forget! Advice: Start early about 5-6am as the clouds start to move in around 10am or so that was my observation on the 10days I was there. Be prepared as with any high altitude hiking the weather can change in a second. In the sun it was about 55-65 degrees in the shade it felt much colder and the weather was change as we left by 11am. Have a safe hike, God Bless!!!
This makes such an amazing trip! Take your digital camera with you and get ready to take some unique pictures. Take light layers and be prepared to get a little wet. If you walk through a cloud, you'll be wet walking out. If you plan to connect to the sliding sands trail, then this is not a trail to take any sort of sandals; you need covered shoes because of the small volcanic rocks you'll come across that will become lodged in your footwear. The temperature changes are drastic if you come out after dark so have an emergency blanket on hand. Enjoy your trip and stay safe--the switchback is muddy.
