Halemauu Trail to Crater Rim Overlook, Haleakala National Park Professional Review and Guide

"The Halemauu Trail descends from the west rim of the Haleakala Crater and crosses the crater floor to the eastern end. This hike follows the first mile of the trail, traversing the upper slope across the alpine scrubland to an overlook at the edge of the crater. From the rim are expansive views of the northern flanks of Haleakala, Koolau Gap and the moist cliffs of Leleiwi. The crater floor is dotted with several multi-colored cinder cones."

We went to the top of crater to see the sunrise over the volcano. The anticipation of the sunrise gave away to the beautiful landscape that appeared to change right before our eyes. As the the sky became lighter the crater landscape took on a silver hue (mainly due to the only plant that grows in this region - the silver sword). From the summit the crater's landscape, one could have been mistaken for a North Eastern American forest suffering the effects of a prolonged ice storm. The cloud cover combined with the vast amount of blooming silver swords left us in awe as we truly felt we were thousands of miles north in a different part of the world. What made the day was within a very short time, we on the beach enjoying 80 degree weather. What a transformation.... Now show me the hiking shoes!!! Best Regards Bryan from 10,000 ft up!!!
