Alapena Pool and Falls

Alapena Pool and Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Alapena Pool sits in a gorgeous jungle setting a short distance off the Pali Highway in Honolulu. Alapena Falls is a 15-foot cascade on Nuuanu Stream that tumbles into the deep pool. The short, unsigned path leads directly to the pool, which is popular with locals but relatively unknown as a tourist destination.

After viewing the scenic lookout and pagoda, walk a hundred yards up the Pali Highway, away from Honolulu. Watch for a trail on the left at the end of the rock wall. Take the footpath into the shade of the lush tropical forest. A short distance ahead is an overlook of Alpena Falls cascading into the large pool. The path descends to the banks of the pool across from the waterfall. The path continues downstream to a few additional smaller waterfalls and pools. Return to your vehicle along the same route."

nice afternoon..warm..I did this after doing Makiki Loop. I parked in the scenic overlook and walked up the Pali a little bit to get to the unmarked trail. Followed it down to the bottom of what I thought was the pool and falls but i was a little downstream. There was a LOT of trash strewn about which was a little disheartening. On the way back up the hillside, we took a different path which led to the pool and falls. There were locals swimming and jumping which looked like at least 30 to 40 feet or more. Good on them. Anyway.. The mosquitos were chomping at my legs so i hurried out of there. This is nice to have inside of town and but needs a good cleaning. I might try to organize a clean up of the area in the next 6 months or so. I just need to figure out how to dispose of the waste.

A very easy and quick hike with a 20-30 foot cliff edging the deep Alapena Pool. Great for cliff jumping if you are brave enough to enter the merky water. A sign is posted just outside the trail at the senic lookout warning hikers and swimmers to swim and hike at their own risk due to the bacteria that may or may not be in the water. I wouldn't and didn't take that risk, however there were a few locals jumping off the cliff. I suggest that if you want to enter the water, make sure that you don't have any open sores or wounds, and bring some insect repenlent. But if you want a challenging hike with with scenic rewards, I suggest you choose a different location.
