Waldron Ledge Loop Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"There are excellent views of Kilauea caldera from Waldron Ledge, as the clifftop on the northeast edge of the caldera is known. That’s followed by a visit to the beautiful rainforest on Byron Ledge and along the Halemaumau Trail. This route lets you experience the best part of the Byron Ledge and Halemaumau trails along with one of the most scenic segments of the Crater Rim Trail! Far below, the trail on the crater floor stretches away from you, seeming little more than a scratch on the floor’s blackness. Near its west end is the great reddish cinder cone of Puu Puai.
The crater is on two levels—the main, lower level below you here on the east and a slightly higher bay on the west end. Byron Ledge rises at the west end of the crater, separating it from Kilauea caldera. If the weather permits, you can see across Kilauea caldera and beyond Kilauea to the gently sloping mass of Mauna Loa. This trip stays on the crater rim for a while, then descend into the crater at the west end, via Byron Ledge."
