Sulphur Bank- Sandalwood Loop Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This loop offers an easy walk through some dramatically contrasting landscapes: the evil-smelling, mineral-crusted Sulphur Bank and the green, misty Sandalwood Trail. From the far end of the Kilauea Visitor Center parking lot, you cross Crater Rim Road to pick up the spur to the Crater Rim Trail.
At the first junction, you turn hard left toward Kilauea Iki and Thurston Lava Tube, passing Volcano House on the caldera side and the original site of Volcano Observatory. Interpretive signs, birdlife, yellow ginger, ohia, uluhe, and orange montbretia combine with the superb views over Kilauea caldera to fill this stretch with fascination and beauty. The edge of the caldera seems to slump away from you in narrow steps; thank goodness for the stone wall that keeps you safely up on the rim here."
