Rainbow Falls and Banyans Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"You won’t want to miss this exquisite waterfall and pool, but unless you get here before 9:00 a.m. or around the dinner, you will have to share the falls with a steady stream of sightseers and tour buses. Early in the morning is the best time to see the rainbows shimmering in the mist above the falls anyway. You can extend your hike a bit and escape most of the tourists by continuing over a low rise and down into a leafy grove of mango and banyan trees.
Rainbow Falls, part of Wailuku River State Park, is said be the home of Hina, mother of the demigod Maui. You have only to walk to the railing beside the parking lot for the best views, but a concrete path extends a short distance both downstream and upstream from the pool. The Wailuku River pours over a sheer cliff over the entrance to a cave in the lava before tumbling on to the sea."
