Puuhonua o Honaunau (City of Refuge) Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This fascinating re-creation of a Hawaiian royal compound and its adjacent city of refuge also offers pleasant, easy walking, beautiful scenery, snorkeling, and picnicking at Puuhonua o Honaunau, formerly known as the City of Refuge. An option not covered in the distance and time figures above is a visit to a “modernized” segment of an old Hawaiian trail. This National Historical Park is open from 7:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. daily.
A thatch-roofed information counter just below the parking lot may offer brochures if you did not pick one up at the gate. Or you may find a staffer there to answer your questions. With brochure in hand, bear to your left as you face the sea to pick up a stone-bordered path that is feature number one in the brochure. From here, you can follow the path approximately clockwise in a loop around the village complex. Paths across the loop offer ways to cut your explorations short or to extend them; it’s up to you."
