Puu Oo Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The Puu Oo Trail offers a variety of scenery: open woods, broad meadows, and stark intrusions of barren lava. One of its most beloved features is the amount of bird life along it. It’s an outstanding trail for birders. Even if you don’t feel up to the entire trip, I hope you’ll go at least as far as the first meadow. Carefully walk west on the shoulder of the Saddle Road toward the crest of the next hill. I recommend that when you’re walking on a road, you assume that anyone operating a vehicle on that road is deaf, blind, and insane.
As you approach the crest of this little hill, look for an old road on the south-southwest (left) side of the Saddle Road. About 100 feet down that road you’ll see a small wooden trailhead sign and, below it, a yellow sign with a big hole in it. Take the old road past those signs; it’s the Puu Oo Trail. It quickly becomes a rough track that heads south through aa toward an ohia forest."
