Napau Crater Trail to Napau Crater Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This is a trip of enormous contrasts—miles of shiny, bare lava versus miles of green, sopping-wet rainforest. Near Napau Crater, you pass a historical site that will make you do a double-take. You leave the Chain of Craters Road behind and strike out generally southwest, sometimes on a beaten path and sometimes following cairns across pahoehoe.
The route could use a few more cairns, especially on the newer lava, but otherwise the going is straightforward. It’s not long before you see an arresting sight: a bulging lava dome from which a tree seems to be growing. At first, the pahoehoe is brown and weathered; around the 1-mile point, you encounter darker, less weathered lavas. The steep cliffs and rounded top of Puu Kapukapu rise in the distance, to the west. On this trip, you won’t be going nearly that far, but Puu Kapukapu is a handy landmark."
