Mauna Loa Trail to Red Hill Cabin Backpack Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Those who yearn to hike on Mauna Loa but who fear they may suffer altitude sickness if they risk going all the way to the summit or if they attempt the Observatory Trail hikes may enjoy going partway, to the Red Hill Cabin at 10,035 feet. You leave the parking area, such as it is, and bear west-southwest down the steep old road.
In just a few steps, you reach a fork; go left here. You continue to descend steeply to moderately between veritable walls of tall, dense grasses, past avocado, mango, koa haole festooned with morning glory vines, tamarind, monkeypod, and papaya trees. Your route is paralleled on the left by a wire fence and a stone wall, half-lost in the dense growth."
